The Problem
Homeless Children
There are an estimated 100,000 homeless children in Ethiopia's capital city, Addis Ababa, alone. Many NGOs, however, estimate that number to be much higher.
Unreliable Shelters
Although some shelters exist, their capacity is usually small, housing fewer than 20 children. On top of that these shelters usually charge the children a daily rate to stay there.
Substance Abuse
Overcome by the difficulty of their situation, many children resort to sniffing glue, which is easy to obtain on the street.
Human Trafficking
Human trafficking has become an increasing issue. Young girls are often forced into domestic service slavery.
How We Help
A Wonderful Partnership
Pay it Forward Ethiopia has partnered with Hold My Hand, an NGO based in Ethiopia.
Hold my Hand was founded by three Ethiopian university students who were alarmed by the increasing number of homeless youth in the Bole sub-city area. What started as a weekend support group in 2014 has turned into a permanent all boys shelter offering foster care, familiy reunification, and support for some of Ethiopia's most at-risk homeless boys.
Through this partnership, Hold My Hand has been able to expand its opperations to provide a third home for girls, as young as 5 years old.
